In English, 'ch' can be pronounced in a number of different ways. It can be silent or be pronounced /tʃ/. When the word is of French or Greek origin, 'ch' is pronounced /ʃ/ and /k/, respectively.
3. Practise the pronunciation of LOT-words and THOUGHT-words
In British English, some of the LOT- and the THOUGHT-words have an unexpected spelling to the extent that they are not written with 'o' but, in particular, 'a'. Since in American English, British LOT- and THOUGHT-words are pronounced with /ɑ(ː)/ anyway, the spelling is - in this sense - more regular. Do you still get it? 🤨
